GE Healthcare, an arm of General Electric Co., has forged a strategic alliance with US-based oncology chain Cancer Treatment Services International (CTSI) to build 25 cancer treatment centres across India, jointly investing about $120 million (around Rs.725 crore) in the project.
The initiative primarily aims to detect cancer at an early stage in patients and thus make treatment more affordable by potentially reducing more expensive later-stage treatment costs. It also aims to reach out to patients in remote parts of the country who have limited access to treatment.
The first centre—American Oncology Institute, which is CTSI’s international brand—is already operational in Hyderabad with 250 beds and about 30 doctors.
The two firms said more centres will soon be opened in other parts of Andhra Pradesh and that CTSI is also evaluating locations in other states.
“Scaling up of affordable access to cancer care requires disruptive solutions and willing partners. We believe a partnership like this one presents a great opportunity to confront India’s cancer challenge head on,” John Dineen, global chief executive officer (CEO) of GE Healthcare, said in a statement. GE Healthcare said it is a minority investor in the initiative.
GE Healthcare is not the only organization trying to make cancer treatment more affordable in India. Bangalore-based Healthcare Global Enterprises, which is structured like a law or an audit firm, offers the kind of payment options consumer product retailers or car dealers do. Though cancer treatment costs in India are estimated to be at least 25% cheaper than in other countries such as the US, the average cost of cancer treatment for low-to-middle income classes in India is still quite steep.
