Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corp. Ltd
In an attempt to improve the telecommunication connectivity with the distant Andaman and Nicobar, the government of India has proposed an undersea cable link. The project is likely to cover nine main islands of the Union Territory.
According to the official memo proposal, the project will be implemented by Andaman and Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corp. Ltd along with the ministry of home affairs. Department of telecommunications will be rendering technical expertise for the project.
The project cost of this island, located about 1,000km from Chennai, is estimated at more than Rs. 800 crore. The cable will connect all nine major islands of the Andaman and Nicobar administration, said the official memo.
When asked, if the island is key to India’s strategic initiatives in the area, the former secretary in the ministry of External Affairs, Mr. N. Ravi, said: “Absolutely, it’s of great importance whether you look at it in terms of disaster management or you look at it in terms of strategic issues”.
