The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has secured approval from the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) to move ahead with the super critical power plant project in Thiruvallur district, north of Chennai.
Scheduled to be established in the existing ash dyke of North Chennai Thermal Power Station, the Ennore special economic zone (SEZ) supercritical plant would occupy 500 acres, of which 130 acres will be developed under the green belt and 40 acres will be used for external corridor, including sea water and coal conveyor, Business Standard reports.
The INR91.8bn ($1.4bn) project would comprise two supercritical coal fired power generation units, each with a gross generating capacity of 800MW.
The project is expected to have an imported coal requirement of 4.29mtpa, which will be supplied by Indonesia as part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with MMTC.
Tamil Nadu currently depends on the central power sector and independent power producers for nearly 50% of its requirement, which is increasingly growing due to rapid population growth, urbanisation and industrialisation, according to the news agency
