Times of India quoted Mr K Sadanand, assistant chief engineer for the state highways department, as said that a detailed project report for the Chennai Peripheral Road will be ready by July this year. He said that “INR 10 crore has been sanctioned for the feasibility study of the project which will be completed soon. The fine tuning of the alignment is still going on." MrSadanand was talking at a seminar organized by the Japanese consulate in Chennai. He said that "The road is mainly targeted to cater to freight movement of goods coming from southern parts of the state to reach the Ennore port. Vehicles will not have to go through Chennai city. We are trying to stay ahead by planning this road before the Outer Ring Road is completed." The chief engineer also explained how Tamil Nadu had a wider coverage of highways as compared to rest of the country. He said that "While the country as a whole has 142 kilometer of roads for every 100 square kilometer, Tamil Nadu has 148 kilometer. We also have 1,500 kilometer of national highways, 62,000 kilometer of state highways, 1,357 major bridges and around 1.18 lakh bridges, road over bridges and foot over bridges."
