Jindal Power announced it has commissioned the first 600 megawatt unit of a 2,400 MW expansion project at its coal-fired power plant in Chhattisgarh. The new unit, now a part of India's first mega power project with a capacity of 1,000 MW before the expansion, was completed in record time.
"This has been done in a record period of 27 months from start of boiler erection which is a new benchmark in the country for all units of similar capacity," Jindal Power said in a statement. "The project envisages a total investment of nearly $2 billion."
The company expects to commission an additional two units by March 14, with one reportedly synchronized on Feb. 22. The expansion project has been divided into two phases of 1,200 MW each. The first phase of 1200 MW has been granted coal linkage by the Government of India.
Jindal said it aims to have a total installed capacity of 10 GW by 2020 with a mix of energy sources, including thermal and renewable energy.
