Minister of state for railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary inaugurated the much-awaited rail line between Junagarh and Bhubaneswar on Sunday through teleconferencing. MP (Kalahandi) Bhakta Charan Das flagged off the Hirakhand Slip Express at Junagarh Road railway station as part of the ceremony. Sources said the 24-km line was extended up to Junagarh Road from Bhawanipatna at a cost of Rs 227 crore. The train would now leave Junagarh at 6.15 pm everyday and reach Bhubaneswar via Rayagada the next morning at 8.25 am. Das said the project successful crossed all roadblocks to see the light of day. "The work on rail line from Junagarh to Nabarangpur will begin in July," he said. In 1993-94, the 54-km railway line from Lanjigarh Road to Junagarh was sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 142.98 crores. It took 20 years to complete the project with the cost spiraling to Rs 227 crore, sources added. Divisional railway manager, East Coast Railway (Sambalpur Division) Debraj Panda, film star Bijaya Mohanty, MLA (Junagarh) Gobardhan Das and MLA (Bhawanipatna) Dushmanta Naik were present.
