The police have begun to install nearly 100 CCTV cameras at popular markets, hospitals, petrol pumps, traffic junctions and other public sites here, flinging an electronic web over the city in a bid to arrest the burgeoning crime rate.
The project costing Rs 50 lakh is expected to be completed in 20 days. "We need public help for evicting crime from the city. We have asked resident welfare associations, petrol pump owners, educational institutes, hospitals, banks and even taverns to get the cameras installed. These would be of minimum 3 mega pixels in order to give us clear footage. This will help us create terror among criminals and they will think twice before committing crime," said Ajay Singhal, commissioner of police, Panchkula-Ambala range. "It is a very huge project. We are going to install cameras at all entry and exit points of the city so that criminals do not have an easy time. Work is already in progress and the task will be completed within 20 days," he added.
Last month, the police held a meeting with private institutes, banks, hospitals, petrol pumps and RWAs seeking their support. A majority of them showed interest but a few RWAs complained about their inefficiency to bear the cost. "RWAs had some financial issues. We decided to bear the cost as the project is for the safety of residents. I want them to sleep peacefully at night," said Singhal.
