Six months from now, the Salem City Municipal Corporation ( SCMC) will be producing power from food waste.
The bhumi puja for SCMC's first bio-methanation plant was performed here on Saturday. Mayor S Soundappan said on the occasion that the 90-lakh plant is coming up at the Veeranam on the outskirts of Salem town with technology provided by Pune-based company, Mailhem Engineers Private Limited.
"There are nearly 1.80 lakh families living in the city and daily we collect 400 ton of waste including 18 ton of food waste. About 5 metric ton of food waste will be used to generate 5,000 units of electricity," he said. He further said the energy released by it, equivalent to 10 gas cylinders, can power more than 500 LED streetlights for eight hours. "Food waste, kitchen waste including vegetable peels, abattoir waste, flower and fruit waste and agro waste can be digested by this plant," he said and, added that the plant is being constructed on a pilot basis.
