Tthe new bulk water supply facility, planned to lift Cuvery water near the Krishnarajsagar dam, will get sanction from the Centre in early March. The new facility could be built in 2016 as planned. The Rs 327.50-crore project, which has got the seal of approval from the Mysore City Corporation in December, is projected to meet the water requirement of the tourist hub for seven decades. Vishwanath, who had initially opposed the project following objections by some Congressmen, is now convinced that the project is crucial for the city's planned growth. The empowered panel in the Union urban development ministry is likely to okay the project on March 4, he told reporters on Friday. The plan is to lift water from KRS backwaters by building a facility at Hale Undavadi, 2km from the reservoir, and supply it to the city. The project, which has factored in the growth given improved connectivity between Mysore and Bangalore and the decadal growth in population, envisages drawing water using gravitational force, and by eliminating dependence on electricity. The project will also be networked with other two water supply schemes so that water is available to all parts of the city even if one of them fails. As per an estimate, Mysore requires 2 tmcft of water from KRS dam by 2016. The requirement will jump to 4 tmcft by 2046, and 8.11 tmcft by 2061.
