The phase II of Chennai Metro Rail Project is estimated at Rs 36,000 crore. The Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has zeroed in three corridors for the phase II development, according to senior official from CMRL.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Conference on 'Automotive R&D Trends', organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in Chennai today, R Ramanathan, Director - Projects, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd said "we have made a presentation to the Government for the phase II, which will run for around 60 kms with three co-corridors. The estimated project cost is around Rs 36,000 crore".
The Tamil Nadu's largest infrastructure project was funded by by Japan International Cooperation Agency (59 %), 20% by the Union Government and 21% by the state government. It may be noted, the entire stretch in the Phase II would be underground.
Commenting on Phase I development, he said, when the project was initiated in 2007 the estimated cost of the 45 kms project was around Rs 14,600 crore and forecasted five% increase, as on today the project cost comes to Rs 20,000 crore. For example, land cost was estimated to be around Rs 1,000 crore, but already it has touched Rs 2,500 crore now.
The first 10kms stretch between Koyambedu and Alandur will be ready by 2014 end, while the St Thomas Mount and Airport will be ready by 2015. Rest of the Phase I will be completed before December 2016.
This will be first Metro project in the country, which will integrate other public transportation system.
