In a pilot project aimed to revive the polluted Karamana-Killi river system, the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) has joined hands with the Trivandrum Development Authority (Trida).
Estimated to cost around Rs 5 crore, the Karamana - Killi River Scientific Management (pilot) project is being implemented with the support of other departments along six kilometres, from Myladikkadavu to Airanimuttam.
The pilot scheme, approved by the state planning board, integrates nine sub-projects to be implemented by agencies including the Thiruvananthapuram corporation, works department, irrigation, sewerage departments and the Biodiversity Board
. A co-ordination committee, technical committee and a monitoring cell have been formed for smooth implementation of the project.
The sub-projects include increasing the depth of Thiruvallam stream and construction of spillways along its banks to aid drinking water supply.
The irrigation department has undertaken the work expected to cost about Rs 50 lakh. The department also plans to construct a Rs 22.5-lakh spillway at Myladikkadavu to increase water flow in Killi river during summer.
The biodiversity board has proposed setting up a Rs 18.5 lakh biodiversity park at the bund between Myladikkadavu and Killipalam.
Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram corporation is planning to take up Rs 52.5 lakh worth of projects including maintenance, sealing and placing silt traps along the drains between Myladikkadavu and Airanimuttam. The PWD is also expected to invest around Rs 1 crore for improving the drainage systems in the area.
