Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) will spend Rs 10.31 crore to save its citizens from floods by raising embankments on two sides of the river Tapi .
With heavy silting, the carry capacity of the river has decreased . As a result, any release from Ukai dam in excess of 2.5 lakh Cusecs of water leads to flooding in low lying areas of Singanpore and Rander in Surat city where embankments are of lower size.
SMC took a decision to raise the height of embankments so that carrying capacity of the river during flood time could increase. On Rander bank it was decided to raise the embankment by 2.10 meters and on Singanpore bank it was decided to raise the embankment by 1.30 meters.
" We had initially estimated additional expenses of Rs 7 crore but now with tenders being higher than the estimated amount, we will incur expenses of Rs 10.31 crore to raise the height." Said an official from SMC.
This raising of height will ensure safety of people in this two areas up to the release of 3.50 lakh Cusecs of water.
