Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday laid the foundation of the citys first flyover to be built on the PPP mode.
The builder, Riverbank Holdings, has already started survey work for the 7.7-km fast-track elevated corridor from Jinjhirabazar to Batanagar in the citys southern fringes. The chief minister laid the foundation from Netaji Indoor Stadium, and sent her urban development minister Firhad Hakim to the venue on Budge Budge Trunk Road. "The Rs 255-crore flyover will be completed in two years. We have requested people at Budge Budge, Mahestala and Pujali to vacate the area needed for building the flyover," said Hakim. The Budge Budge Trunk Road, too, will be widened as part of the project. Thanks to the PPP model, the infrastructure reform wont burden the already cash-trapped government into further financial load.
"We are extremely happy that the flyover project has finally taken off," Riverbank Holdings MD Sumit Dabriwala said, "The survey work has already started. Digging and piling will begin in three months. The flyover project will be completed in two years from then."
Once the two-lane flyover is built, a drive to Batanagar, which now stands at 40-45 minutes, will be reduced to 10 minutes flat. Thirty-five per cent of the cost will be borne by the centre since this is a JNNURM project. Delhi has sanctioned Rs 86.8 crore - the rest of the cost will be borne by the consortium of Riverbank Holdings and its joint venture partner, L & T. Dabriwala, who has been pushing for the flyover ever since he had started his housing project - Calcutta Riverside township - at Batanagar in 2009, has now shifted base from Mumbai to execute the project.
