The state government is finally set to give shape to its dream of the Kolkata Eye project on the banks of Hooghly river - a giant ferries wheel modeled on the famous London Eye. It will float the expression of interest on Thursday - just a day ahead of the renovated riverfront inauguration - to invite private players to execute the project on a public-private partnership basis. The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) will be the nodal agency. State urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim said the department had already acquired land for the project. Apart from selecting private players for the project, the government also intends to get in touch with UK-based experts for technical assistance. The government had discussed the project with representatives of a UK-based company at Writers Buildings some time back. According to sources, all hurdles related to land acquisition have been sorted out. "A 2-acre spot just opposite Millennium Park has been handed over to the urban development department," said a government official. The state government had earlier written to the ministry of shipping to allow KoPT to auction off a 2-acre plot on Strand Road so that it could be utilized for the project.
