The cabinet committee on economic affairs has approved a financial assistance of Rs 480 crore for the upgrade of government-run medical colleges in Aurangabad, Latur, Akola and Yavatmal under the PMs Swathya Sewa Yojana (PMSSY). Each college will get Rs 120 crore, while the state will have to contribute Rs 30 crore. "Its the biggest-ever financial assistance package from the Centre for medical colleges upgrade. We have been asked to allocate Rs 30 crore for each college as the states share. All formalities will be completed within stipulated time," Vijaykumar Gavit, medical education minister said. A senior bureaucrat has said that he upgrade involves procuring and installing medical equipment, building a trauma centre and super-specialty blocks in oncology, nephrology, endocrinology, cardiology, thoracic surgery, ENT, orthopaedics, paediatric surgery, burns and plastic surgery. The bureaucrat said the Centre wants the states commitment on the Rs 30-crore allocation and creation of posts with personnel. It is also seeking state commitment toward securing unencumbered land for the project and availability of power and water, with permissions from environment authorities and local bodies and the setting up of a state-level review committee under the chairmanship of the chief secretary.
