The delayed project of water supply has got the approval of the central government after continuous efforts made by the civic body for the past three years. The project for providing water to ten outer wards of the city will begin soon, with the release of the first installment of about Rs12 crore.
The Rs 116-crore project will be financed as a joint venture, with the central government contributing 50 per cent, the state government contributing 20 per cent, and the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation contributing the remaining 30 per cent.
According to the plan, Rs42 crore will be spent on laying water pipes in the wards, and Rs36 crore will be spent on overhead tanks. Until the time the project is completed, the outer wards will continue with their water supply from private borewells, and drinking water from MC tankers.
The other projects which are on the cards for sanction are the integrated solid waste management project, eight-laning of the Ferozpur Road, and renovation of the Chandigarh Road and the Old GT Road.
"These four projects will get approval before February 15," said Sumeet Jarangal, additional commissioner.
