The Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) has cleared the proposal for establishing a maritime university in the state.
The university is being touted as a premier institute that will be established much on the lines of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU).
GMB will soon appoint a consultant to work out details like land requirement, type of courses, ideal location, model of funding.
"We are also exploring the options of partnering with some reputed foreign university as a knowledge partner," the official said.
Asked as to why they are keen to follow the PDPU model, the official said, "Besides being a premier institute for energy sector education, PDPU also has a swanky infrastructure. The admissions to the institute are also through entrance exams. We need to follow such a model so as to ensure that the maritime university does not end up becoming just another government college where the major attraction is less fees."
There is an increasing thrust on quality maritime education in India, considering the increasing demand for sea farers in the world. As per estimates, close to 4.5 lakh additional sea farers will be required in the next six years. At present there are 1.15 million sea farers in the world of Indians are just around 6%.
