The Tirunelveli District Administration Has Announced That Administrative Sanction Has Been Granted For The Construction Of A Breakwater In Uvari Village With Dimensions As Requested By The Villagers.
An Official Statement From The District Collector On Monday Stated That Sanction Has Been Granted With The Revised Estimation Of Rs 63 Crore. The Breakwater Would Be Constructed 1,560m Long Towards North And 400m Long Towards South, Covering The Village From Our Lady Of Church To Kappalmatha (Our Lady Of Wealth) Church In These Directions. With Sea Erosion Eating Away The Village Steadily, The Villagers Have Been Demanding A Breakwater For The Last 15 Years. Lately, The Sea Erosion Has Turned Worse With The Waves Hitting The Compound Walls Of The Kappalmatha Church.
According To The District Administration, The Construction Project Would Be Carried Out Under The State Governments Proposed Developmental Works Around Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant For Rs 500 Crore. As Requested By The People, The Breakwater Size Has Been Increased To 1,560m From 1,150m In The North And The Budget Cost Has Been Revised To Rs 63 Crore From The Earlier Cost Of Rs 52 Crores, District Collector, Karunakaran Stated. He Had Also Mentioned That The Breakwater Will Be Effective To Arrest The Sea Erosion Threatening The Village And Allow The Fishing Community In The Village To Anchor Their Boats In The Safety Of The Breakwaters. Besides, The Structure May Also Pave Way In Promoting Marine Tourism Activities In The Future, He Said.
