Gatifloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, is formulated as eye drops for ophthalmic use. The drug is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis and is a fluoroquinoline antibacterial antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerases II and IV, enzymes which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription and translation.
