The Ministry Of Water, Land And Resource Stewardship (Wlrs), In Partnership With The Ktunaxa Nation Council (Knc), And The ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation (ʔafn), Are Seeking Proposals To Develop A Strategic Habitat Plan Guided By Ktunaxa Values For The East Side Columbia Lake Wildlife Management Area (Wma) (Attachment A). The General Vision For The East Side Columbia Lake Strategic Habitat Plan Is To Achieve Healthy, Properly Functioning Ecosystems For The Purpose Of Conservation And Management Of Wildlife, Fish, And Their Habitats Through Collaborative Stewardship While Supporting A Variety Of Integrated And Diverse Land And Resource Values. The Overarching Goal Is To Develop A Stewardship Plan That Considers The Diverse Values On The Landscape And Provides Recommendations For How To Maintain Or Improve Ecosystem Health Throughout.Phase 1 Was Completed In March 2025, Resulting In A Draft Landscape Values Assessment That Compiled Historical Information, Current Uses, And Includes A Risk/Opportunity Assessment (Attachment B), Along With A Values Overlay Map (Attachments C).This Opportunity Will Be For Phase 2, Which Will Ground Truth The Top Primary Identified Values At Risk (Attachment A) In Phase 1 And Will Provide Guidance And Recommendations For Potential Restoration Projects And Management Options Focused On Improving Ecosystem Health And Maintaining Ktunaxa Past, Present, And Future Values In The Wildlife Management Area (Wma). This Will Involve A Community Engagement With First Nations Facilitated By Ktunaxa Nation Council And ʔakisq̓nuk First Nation Staff, Collecting Supplemental Data In The Field, Mapping Of Key Areas, And An Action Plan To Outline Suggested Management/Project Enhancement Options And Timelines For Completion.In Addition To The Strategies And Management Options That Form The Basis Of The Strategic Habitat Plan, The Proponent Will Develop Two Prescriptive Implementation Strategies That Meet All The Legal Requirements, Such As A Stand Management Or Ecological Restoration Prescriptions Written By A Qualified Professional, Which Will Be Signed And Sealed By A Registered Professional Forester And A Registered Professional Biologist. These Prescriptions Should Be Immediately Actionable At Conclusion Of This Contract.
