Tenders are invited for E3C1-037 - Conversational Human-Ai Tool for Transcription and Enhanced Response (Chatter) - Expro plus Space-to-ground communication is vital for the International Space Station (ISS), the Lunar Gateway and other crewed spacecraft andmission contexts. Voice exchanges between astronauts and ground control play a key role both in everyday and critical situations. Currently, these exchanges are recorded and stored for three days, serving as input to operational review and analysis, which is donemanually by the Flight Control Team.Introducing the Conversational Human-AI Tool for Transcription and Enhanced Response (CHATTER)offers several advantages for day-to-day operational scenarios:1.Real-Time Transcription: CHATTER can convert live audio communications into text, providing immediate transcripts of conversations. This feature is particularly beneficial during critical operations, allowing team members to quickly reference and review instructions without replaying audio.2.Contextual Understanding: Standard speech-to-text software like Copilot struggles with the highly contextualised language used in space operations. To overcome this, CHATTER was trained to comprehend and accurately transcribe this domain-specific terminology, reducing errors and miscommunications.3.Enhanced Data Retention, Analysis, and Insight Generation: CHATTER goes beyond basic transcription by leveraging a large language model (LLM) to create structured, searchable records of space-to-ground communications. This allows for efficient retrieval of key exchanges, automatic summarisation of conversations, and identification of recurring issues or trends. The LLM can also assist in post-mission analysis by highlighting anomalies, generating reports, and suggesting potential improvements based on historical data.Byproviding deeper insights into operational communications, CHATTER enhances decision-making, training, and long-term mission planning. CHATTER is expected to significantly reduce the workload of flight controllers, enabling them to focus on real-time decision-making rather than manual data extraction.CHATTER has been prototyped internally in the AI Lab and demonstrated at TRL 4. The aim of this activity to: - mature the software to TRL 6 by validating its performance in the relevant environment and integrating it into a simulated operational setting, such as COL-CC and EUROCOM for ISS- advance to TRL 7 by demonstrating CHATTER in a real operational context with end-user involvement, ensuring qualification for deployment- prepare for full operational integration, addressing system compatibility, reliability, and security requirements- develop the maintenance concept to ensure continuity and long-term usabilityThis activity is proposed to be implemented with the expectation that industry would be leading the project. To achieve TRL 9 including the deployment into the operational environment, ongoing support, further development and training, additional funding in the order of magnitude 750 k will be required.
