Work Detail

Tenders are invited for Exploitation of Terrestrial 5G Beamforming Technologies for Satellite Communications (ARTES 4.0 SPL 5G/6G 7B.087) - EXPRO+. This activity will perform a critical assessment of terrestrial 5G technologies and, specifically, beamforming technologies, and will identify synergies relevant to the requirements of satellite communications. The objective is to identify common technology areas and features between 5G and satellite communications and to select several suitable scenarios for validation. Targeted Improvements: Enabling convergence of the satellite and terrestrial 5G beamforming chip supply chain. Description: Technologies developed traditionally for terrestrial 5G large-volume applications are naturally spinning into the satcom area, enabling new systems and global connectivity. This is not only because some of the frequency bands are overlapping (e.g., S-band, Ka-band, V-band, E/W-band), but also because satellite communications systems follow the same evolutionary trends towards high-capacity, enabled through similartechnologies and communication concepts. RF technologies, e.g., RFIC packaging, RF concepts, linearisation, high-density PCBs, together with wireless communication concepts such as beamforming, are areas in which terrestrial 5G and satellite systems increasinglyconverge. The spin-in evolution occurs not only in the conventional cellular bands (direct-to-mobile), but also at higher frequency bands, including the terrestrial V-band systems and above, i.e., E-band frequencies that overlap with the satellite W-band (71-76GHz and 81-86 GHz), and possibly D-Band.This activity shall identify synergies of key technologies and wireless communication concepts between terrestrial 5G and satellite communication systems, considering the space, ground, and user segments, and shall reviewrelevant technologies and concepts for demonstration. Terrestrial cellular systems up to D-band shall be considered, including the following:1. Antenna architectures2. Beamforming networks3. Integration technologies and packaging4. PCBs5. Critical COTS building blocks6. Manufacturing and processes Applicability of selected concepts in selected frequency bands will be validated by at least two technology demonstrators. Examples of demonstrators could be: 1) Sub-6GHz and mm-wave 5G technologies (e.g., MIMO concepts, beamforming aspects under OFDM waveforms, 5G COTS RF frontends compatible with satcom; 2) E/W-band backhaul technologies (e.g., integrated multi-Gbps frontends and integrated antennas for satcom feeder links, E/W-band backhaul COTS compatible with satcom). Procurement Policy: Open Competitive Tender Type: C2Procurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required.
