Project Background: The Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has recently secured 2024 Somalia Humanitarian Fund allocations to implement an emergency lifesaving WASH intervention targeting vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs) and rural villages in Kismayu. This initiative is part of a broader response to address the urgent needs stemming from the recent influx of IDPs and the impact of environmental challenges, including potential flooding due to El Niño. The project aims to respond to critical gaps in water, sanitation, and hygiene services exacerbated by the displacement of communities and the destruction of essential infrastructure. The intervention will focus on ensuring equal access to WASH services for the elderly, individuals with disabilities, children and women. QRCS plans to purchase and distribute 1,000 WASH supplies, including water purification tablets, hygiene kits, and sanitation materials, strategically targeting areas with the greatest need. Community representatives, particularly women and girls, will be engaged in the planning and distribution process to ensure that safety and accessibility concerns are adequately addressed in collaboration with local authorities.
