The University of Canterbury has 71 operational lifts of different kind in 40 buildings across the campus. Lifts can be essential for providing vertical circulation, particularly in tall buildings, for wheelchair and other non-ambulant building users and for the vertical transportation of goods. Some lifts may also be used for firefighting and evacuation purposes. With the establishment of the campus in the 1970, some of the early lifts are due to an upgrade for motors, drives and controllers. Vertrans have carried out a condition surveys on all lifts and prioritised necessary upgrades required across the campus.
