Transpower is looking to invest in the USI to meet a transmission need due to ongoing growth in the region. We wish to assess if there is an opportunity to utilise non-transmission solutions to delay major multi-million dollar transmission build, saving our customers money, at no sacrifice to the security of power in the region. For example, flexibility services such as batteries in homes and businesses, could be used to lower loads at peak times, or businesses and industry can defer some of their power use away from those times. Other opportunities or technologies may also be available. We are interested in partnering with potential non-transmission solution suppliers to assist in supporting our transmission need in the Upper South Island. More than one NTS supplier may be selected to participate. Non-transmission solution suppliers will be compensated for these actions, at an overall lower cost to our customers given the resulting deferral in building new transmission assets.
