Tenders are invited for Pioneering E-Mobility in Malawi The case for electric vehicles (EVs) in Malawi is compelling due to a convergence of challenges and opportunities. Malawi faces issues like fuel shortages, an urgent need to decarbonize its transport sector, and the efficient utilization of locally generated electricity. However, it also boasts a clean energy potential with a high share of renewables, well-paved road infrastructure, and a low vehicle ownership rate. These factors, combined with supportive policies like import duty waivers for EVs and charging infrastructure, position Malawi to harness clean energy for transportation, leapfrog towards EV adoption, and attract private sector investment, making EVs a promising solution for the countrys sustainable and resilient mobility future. It becomes evident from the ongoing dialogue and collaboration between the World Bank team, the government, and the private sector that there exists a substantial gap in planning, policy formulation, and investment readiness required to accelerate the adoption of e-mobility. While the potential and benefits of e-mobility are increasingly recognized, the transition from conventional vehicles to electric ones demands a comprehensive and coordinated approach. Bridging this gap requires the development of robust policies and strategies that include EV infrastructure development, regulatory frameworks and financial incentives. Importantly it calls for investment mobilization and partnerships between public and private stakeholders to create an ecosystem conducive to the growth of e-mobility in Malawi.
