Work Detail

Tenders are invited for Assessment of Biomass Changes Caused by Wood Removals for Fuelwood and Charcoal Production in Zambia (Research Study). OBJECTIVE OF THE ASSIGNMENT: This assignment encompasses the scope of work to complete Study 1 Assessment of biomass changes caused by wood removals for fuelwood and/or charcoal consumption. The national forest inventory describes the following five different vegetation classes: (i) Dry evergreen forest, (ii) Dry deciduous forest, (iii) Moist evergreen forest, (iv) Forest woodlands, and Forest plantations (compare IlUA report . A Demand and Supply approach should be used to identify the impact of fuelwood consumption on the five major vegetation classes defined by the National Forest Inventory conducted in 2016. Demand - An in-depth analysis of current consumption of fuelwood for cooking/heating and charcoal production should be carried out. Afterwards, the area size of woodland needed to produce this amount of fuelwood has to be calculated. After the subtraction of deforested areas for fuelwood production (remote sensing analysis), the amount of fuelwood coming from forest areas remaining forest areas is estimated. Supply - The field survey must be structured according to vegetation types, which are suitable for fuelwood supply. After identification of fuelwood collection and charcoal production areas, socio-economic surveys will be conducted to estimate fuelwood consumption. PROPOSED ACTIVITIES: The selected bidder shall carry out the following analysis and activities: 1. Demand analysis 1.1. Analyze the five major vegetation classes regarding their potential to provide wood for fuel or charcoal production 1.2. Compare the current energy mix in rural and urban areas with the national fuelwood study 1.3. Predict future dynamics of energy consumption 1.4. Analyze population dynamics 2. Supply analysis 2.1. Identify fuelwood collection and charcoal production areas for socio-economic survey 2.2. Conduct socio-economic surveys to estimate fuelwood consumption 3. Data analysis and reporting (compare chapter Deliverables below) For more details, please refer to the Terms of Reference (TOR) document attached.
