Work Detail
81298469-Conceptual And Institutional Advice To The Lake Chad Basin Commission. The Lake Chad Basin Is One Of Africas Major Watersheds And Is Home To Around 45 Million People. With Extensive Pasture And Arable Land And Rich Fish Stocks, It Is An Economically And Ecologically Important Area For The Countries Of Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Central African Republic And Libya (Member Countries Of The Lake Chad Basin Commission). The Fragile Ecosystem Of The Lake Chad Basin Is Faced With Overexploitation And Increasing Pollution Of Natural Resources, V. A. Due To The Strong Population Growth, Under Enormous Pressure. Due To The Projected Climate Changes, A Loss Of Up To 23% Of The Area That Is Currently Usable For Rain-Irrigated Agriculture In The Lake Chad Basin Is Expected By The End Of The Century. There Are Increasing Conflicts Over Scarce Resources. There Is Currently A Serious Conflict Between Farmers, Ranchers And Fishermen Over Fishing Channels On The Logone River. The Task Of The Lake Chad Commission (Cblt) Is To Support Its Member Countries In The Sustainable Management Of The Water Resources Of Lake Chad. The Member Countries Of The Lake Chad Commission All Have Weak Statehood And Are Also Characterized By Armed Conflicts. The Poor Population, Most Of Whom Live From Subsistence Agriculture, Is Directly Affected By The Worsening Water Shortage Caused By Climate Change. Giz Has Been Cooperating With Cblt For Many Years. The Focus Of The Current Project Is On Three Fields Of Action: Output 1 Aims To Provide The Cblt With Management And Steering Instruments So That It Can Competently Advise Its Member Countries On Environmentally Friendly, Climate Change-Adapted, Gender-Sensitive And Conflict-Reducing Management Of Transboundary Water Resources. Central To This Are The Improved Use Of The Lake Chad Basin Information System (Digital Database) And The Implementation Of The Water Catchment Area Management Cycle Adapted To The Specific Conditions In The Lake Chad Basin. Output 2 Aims To Enable The Lake Chad Basin Commission To Set Up Partner Platforms With Gender-Sensitive Advocacy In Transboundary Sub-Basins. Priority Challenges And Potential Conflicts, So-Called Hotspots, Should First Be Identified Via These Platforms With The Help Of A Jointly Created Hotspot Map. On This Basis, Tailor-Made Mitigation Measures Can Be Developed In A Participatory Manner And Implemented In An Intervention Zone As An Example. This Approach Has Already Been Used Successfully In The (Smaller) Wazalogone Intervention Zone In The Past (See Project Progress Report 2022). Output 3 Aims To Enable Local Actors In The Logone Sub-Basin To Implement Mitigation Measures With The Support Of The Cblt. By Applying The Farmer Field School Approach And Proven Good Agricultural Practices That Have Been Disseminated With The Support Of Other German And International Development Projects, The Aim Is To Reduce The Consequences Of Environmental Pollution And Climate Change, Particularly For The Poor Population.
