Work Detail
Construction Work – Mitholz Project: Clearance Of A Former Ammunition Storage Facility, Materials Management Test Facility. In 1947, The Stored Ammunition Exploded In An Underground Swiss Army Ammunition Depot In Mitholz, The Force Of Which Caused The River Above It To Collapse. According To Estimates, Up To 3,500 Gross Tons Of Ammunition With Several Hundred Tons Of Explosives Are Still Buried In The Former Railway Tunnel, Under The Rubble Cone In Front Of The Fluh And In The Ejection Areas In The Village. In 2023, The Federal Council Approved A Commitment Loan For The Clearance Of The Former Mitholz Ammunition Depot. By Clearing The Ammunition Residue, The Risks Are Reduced So That Safety In Mitholz Is Guaranteed. The Project Includes Advance Risk-Reducing Measures, Structural Protective Measures For The National Highway And The Railway Line, Preparation For The Evacuation And The Clearance And Disposal Of Ammunition Residues. The Site Will Then Be Repaired And Mitholz Repopulated. In Order To Conserve Transport And External Landfill Volume, The Aim Of The Project Is To Reuse As Much Of The Resulting Material As Possible On Site. However, Since A Significant Proportion Of The Resulting Material Contains Ammunition Residues And Is Chemically Contaminated, Treatment And Triage Of The Resulting Material Is Necessary. Given The Particular Nature Of The Raw Materials And The Specific Requirements For Material Management (Maximum Recovery, Minimum Environmental Impact And Ensuring Safe Disposal), It Is Considered Necessary To Carry Out Appropriate Tests. The Focus Is On Checking The Safe, Legally Compliant Triage, Processing And Disposal Of The Resulting Materials: - Triaging Of The Munitions-Contaminated Excavated Material With Separation Of Metals / Contaminants - Classification Of The Materials (According To Vvea) Into Types A / T / B / E / S - Logistics And Transport Within And Outside The Project Perimeter - Recycling/Disposal Routes: Supply To External Processing Plants (Including Soil Washing System) And Landfills For The Test Phase, It Is Planned To Process Approx. 5,000 M3 Of Excavated And Soil Material In A Test Facility In The Mitholz Perimeter. The Order Includes The Planning, Provision, Installation Including The Preparatory Construction Work, Commissioning, Operation, Maintenance, Adaptation And Dismantling Of The Systems And Facilities Required For The Test Phase. The Overall Scope Also Includes Material Removal, Material Transport, Treatment And Interim Storage Of The Material Fractions As Well As Their Supply To External Treatment, Recycling And Disposal Routes. In Addition, Further Tests Must Be Carried Out Internally And Externally On Specific Systems As Part Of The Test Facility.
