Work Detail
Expression of Interest are invited for Ethiopia Socioeconomic Panel Survey The World Bank is seeking to contract a qualified survey firm to implement the Ethiopia Socioeconomic Panel Survey (ESPS) 2026. The World Bank, through the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) program housed in the Development Economics Survey Unit (DECSU) - will provide overall technical guidance for the assignment, in collaboration with relevant World Bank Group units, government institutions, and development partners in Ethiopia. Launched in 2011/12, five ESPS waves have been conducted. The first wave covered rural areas and small towns; the second, conducted in 2013/14, added urban areas; and the third, in 2015/16, produced a nationally representative ruralurban panel. A new panel began with ESPS4 in 2018/19, covering all nine regional states and the Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa city administrations. ESPS5 followed in 2021/22, maintaining regional and ruralurban representativeness. Previous ESPS rounds were complemented by the High-Frequency Phone Survey launched in 2020, providing timely evidence on livelihoods. As in previous rounds, ESPS 2026 will inform World Bank Group (WBG) country dialogue as well as the design, targeting and monitoring of WBG investments; support longitudinal analysis of broader policies and reforms; and enable rigorous research on dynamics in living conditions, wellbeing and broader development outcomes. The ESPS 2026 will collect nationally and regionally representative longitudinal data from approximately 6,500 households. Subject to additional decisions that are yet to be finalized, survey may also include an additional sample of (1,400) refugee households, potentially paving the way for their integration into future ESPS rounds. The ESPS 2026 will collect information on health, education, work and employment, energy, WASH, consumption, nutrition, food security, financial inclusion, digital access, smallholder agriculture, and broader dimensions of household and individual wellbeing. The data will be collected on the Survey Solutions Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) platform. After cleaning and anonymization, the data and supporting documentationincluding the questionnaire, Basic Information Document, and manualswill be publicly disseminated through the World Bank Microdata Library within three months of completion of fieldwork.
