Expression of Interest are invited for Data Collection for a Household Business Survey Experiment in Kenya (Final) ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION TheWorld Bank is seeking a qualified firm to conduct data collection services insupport of a research project on developing and validating new approaches toidentifying and measuring household businesses in Kenya. Conventionalsurvey methods systematically undercount household businesses, generatingsignificant gaps in understanding the private sector, misinterpretinggender-disaggregated economic participation, and hindering effective policydesign. This undercounting stems from two distinct problems: (i) samplingerror, whereby traditional listing methods miss home-based ornon-commercially apparent businesses because they focus exclusively onstructures with a commercial appearance; and (ii) measurement error,whereby respondents do not self-identify their economic activities as businesseswhen asked with standard survey questions. Thisstudy is designed to address both issues through a rigorous, mixed-methodsdesign. The quantitative component centers on a survey experiment embedded inan augmented household survey, alongside an enhanced listing exercise capableof identifying businesses that standard approaches miss. The study will beconducted in Mombasa and possibly in Nairobi, targeting a sample ofat least 2,000 households to be interviewed twice in person (tworounds of face-to-face data collection). Thedata and evidence generated will inform survey methodology guidance, policydialogue on the informal private sector, and understanding of womens economicparticipation in Kenya.
