Aug 2026 Intervention Sector(s): Health The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) was officially established in 1968 as a national humanitarian organization. Since its inception, the PRCS has been dedicated to the health and well-being of the Palestinian people and other vulnerable populations within the occupied Palestinian territories and in the diaspora. The PRCS strives to alleviate human suffering by providing preventive and curative healthcare, rehabilitation services, and volunteer programs and activities that promote and strengthen social and cultural development, with a focus on the most vulnerable segments of society. The PRCS also emphasizes the dissemination of humanitarian values and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, as well as international humanitarian law . In 1969, the PRCS was mandated to provide humanitarian, health, cultural, and social services in areas where Palestinians reside. Following the Oslo Accords and the official establishment of the Palestinian Ministry of Health by the Palestinian Authority, the PA tasked the PRCS in 1996 and 1999 with providing ambulance, blood transfusion, and emergency services in the Palestinian territories and healthcare services in the diaspora. The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has played a complementary role to public authorities, targeting vulnerable and marginalized segments of the Palestinian population. It has become one of the most important non-profit organizations providing health and social services in the occupied Palestinian territory. Despite all obstacles and difficulties, the PRCS has continued to provide humanitarian services and support to the people through its branches in Palestine and in the host Arab countries where large numbers of Palestinians reside. The PRCS is a full member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and therefore adheres to the Movements fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. In response to the difficult situation of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, the PRCS/Lebanon established five hospitals (one referral and four regional) in addition to nine primary healthcare centers to provide healthcare in specific areas where services and needs are high. All PRCS/Lebanon health facilities are located within or near Palestinian refugee camps. These facilities serve both registered and unregistered refugees, as well as anyone seeking medical assistance. For example, 60% of the 400,000 refugees rely directly on the healthcare system of the Palestine Red Crescent Society/Lebanon. Since February 1999, UNRWA has contracted 82 of the 209 beds in Palestine Red Crescent Society/Lebanon hospitals through annual agreements. UNRWAs reimbursement does not cover the full cost of contracting the beds. Maintaining and upgrading hospital equipment and improving the quality and sustainability of the five Palestine Red Crescent Society/Lebanon hospitals, especially in the current situation in Lebanon, increases the demand on the Palestine Red Crescent Society to deliver essential services to those most in need. Providing medicines, non-reusable materials, and medical supplies, as well as salaries, remains a top priority, and the political and economic situation is rapidly deteriorating. In 2006, the total number of employees working in the Palestinian Red Crescent Society/Lebanon was 616 people. The services provided by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society/Lebanon benefited from : The Societys Mission: The Palestinian Red Crescent Society, as a national humanitarian society and as one of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, seeks to spread the basic principles of the Movement. The Societys vision is to strengthen its position and humanitarian role in providing health and social services, contributing to alleviating suffering and enhancing the resilience of local communities in the face of change. Priority areas include: providing health and social services, primary and secondary healthcare, ambulance services, and hospitals; strengthening support for youth, women, children, people with disabilities, and the most vulnerable groups; responding to natural and man-made disasters; fostering partnerships at the community, national, regional, and international levels; promoting the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement; and building institutional capacity and strengthening the Societys various components.
