Work Detail
Tenders Are Invited For Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Over-The-Air Technology Validations (Artes 4.0 Spl 5G/6G 3F.040) Expro+ The Objective Of The Activity Is To Develop And Implement Over-The-Air Satellite System Demonstrators That Validate Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Technology Developments In Realistic Conditionstargeted Improvements:Enabling A Variety Of Integrated Terrestrial/Satellite 5G/6G Use-Cases Currently Not Feasible With Low-Gain User Antennas.Description: Integrated Terrestrial And Satellite Networks Are Considered A Promising Concept For Supporting Service Demands In 5G And 6G Communications. However, There Are Some Fundamental Issues To Be Tackled For Seamless Integration Of Terrestrial And Satellite Networks, Especially In The Case Of Mobile Users Operating In Complex Environments With Low Directive Antennas. For The Satellite Link, Received Signals Degrade Severely Upon Arrival At The Users Due To The Long-Distance Propagation, Rain Fading Effects And Blockage By Obstacles. Moreover, Due To Spectrum Sharing In The Integrated Terrestrial-Satellite Network, The Interference Mitigation Problem Between The Two Systems Should Be Considered Jointly To Enhance The Spectrum Efficiency. Recently, Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (Ris) Technology Has Drawn Much Attention Due To Its Capability To Enable Reconfiguration Of The Radio Propagation Environment. This Technology Is Based On Large Planar Surfaces, Comprising Many Passive Reflecting Elements Able To Induce A Controllable Amplitude And/Or Phase Change To The Incident Signal. By Strategically Installing Ris (E.G., On Building Facades Or Roofs), System Capacity, Coverage, And/Or Energy Usage Can Be Improved Cost-Effectively. Standardisation Bodies, Such As 3Gpp Or Etsi, Are In Fact Now Discussing Ris Deployments From The Operational And Regulatory Perspectives. Many Developments Focused On Ris Technology Already Take Place As Part Of Industrial, Academic And European Commission Activities. These Developments Have Not Been Demonstrated In An Endto-End Or System Context Including Both Terrestrial And Satellite Networks, Which Is Paramount For Attracting The Interest Of Key Stakeholders Such As Satellite And Mobile Network Operators. To Fill This Gap, This Activity Shall Develop And Implement Several Over-The-Air Satellite System Demonstrators, Validating The Outcome Of Various Ris Technology Developments In Various Integrated Terrestrial-Satellite Architectures. As A Minimum, The Activity Shall Quantify The Benefits Of Ris In The Following Realistic Scenarios, With Low-Gain User Antenna: 1) Improved Link Budged Thanks To The Enhanced Signal-To-Noise Ratio (Snr) At The Receiver Through The Ris-Concatenated Channel.2) Enhanced Satellite User Performance By Employing Ris To Mitigate Inter-System Interference In The Integrated Terrestrial-Satellite System.Additional Demonstrations Can Be Added As Soon As Technology Developments Mature Following An Agile Approach. The Activity Shall Assess All Relevant Ris Developments And Propose Convincing Demonstrations. The Activity Shall Seek Synergies With The Artes Deliverables And Testbeds As Well As By Ongoing Ris Projects And Provide Inputs To The 3Gpp Relevant Standardisation Working Groups.Procurement Policy:C(1) = Activity Restricted To Non-Prime Contractors (Incl. Smes).
