Role Purpose : The Urban Agriculture Trainer is responsible for delivering practical and theoretical training to beneficiaries on small-scale, sustainable, and low-cost urban agriculture techniques. The Trainer empowers households and youth to grow food in limited spaces (balconies, rooftops, courtyards, containers) using climate-smart, water-efficient, and environmentally friendly methods. The role supports the establishment of home gardens, rooftop gardens, and urban farming initiatives to enhance food security, nutrition, and income-generating opportunities for vulnerable communities. Key Resposibilities : A. Training Delivery Conduct practical training on urban agriculture techniques including, but not limited to: Container gardening Vertical gardening Hydroponics or simplified hydroponics (optional) Soil preparation for small spaces Seedling production and transplanting Greenhouse management Irrigation and fertilization Composting and waste recycling Rooftop and balcony gardening techniques Provide hands-on demonstrations and support participants in starting their own home or rooftop gardens. B. Technical Guidance & Follow-Up Offer continuous coaching to participants on maintaining small-scale gardens. Support beneficiaries in selecting suitable crops for limited spaces and urban conditions. Advise on water-saving techniques (drip irrigation, recycled water use). Guide participants on pest management using safe, small-scale, and eco-friendly solutions. C. Curriculum & Tool Development Develop and update training modules for urban agriculture tailored to the projects context. Prepare training materials, visual aids, and simple manuals in clear and accessible language. Participate in the distribution planning of seeds, tools, and materials needed for trainings. D. Monitoring, Documentation & Reporting Conduct household or site visits to monitor progress of urban gardens. Document successes, challenges, and improvements needed. Track attendance, progress, and adoption of techniques using project tools. Submit weekly and monthly reports, including photos and success stories when applicable. E. Community Engagement & Coordination Engage community members to participate in urban farming initiatives. Coordinate with field teams, protection teams, and local partners to ensure smooth implementation. Contribute to awareness sessions on nutrition, environmental sustainability, and food production in cities. F. Safety, Protection & Compliance Ensure all urban agriculture activities comply with safety guidelines for rooftop work, tool use, and water storage. Promote environmentally friendly and safe gardening practices. Follow organizational procedures, safeguarding standards, and donor requirements. Key Performance indicators: Urban agriculture training modules and visual manuals developed/updated and approved by the Livelihoods Project Manager and UN habitat focal point Developing a pre & posttest to measure knowledge gained as a result of the training cycles Weekly coordination with project team (FSL manager and project officers ) to assess attendance of participants and participant progression through the training cycle Required Education & Experience: Education Bachelors degree in Agriculture, Urban Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field. Training certificates in urban farming, permaculture, composting, or hydroponics are a strong asset. Experience Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience in urban agriculture, home gardening, or rooftop/backyard farming. Experience delivering community trainings or agriculture extension work. Experience working with refugees, vulnerable communities, or community-based organizations is preferred. Practical experience in low-cost gardening solutions and recycled-material gardening is an advantage. Required Competencies: Functional: Strong practical knowledge of urban agriculture and small-space farming. Ability to train in: Container and vertical gardening Composting and waste reuse Water-efficient irrigation Soil mixes for small containers Greenhouse production Skill in developing training materials and practical demonstrations. Ability to assess rooftops, balconies, and small areas to identify suitable gardening solutions. Basic knowledge of climate-smart agriculture principles. Good reporting, documentation, and follow-up skills. Competence in using tablets/mobile apps for field data collection (preferred). Behavioral: Strong communication, facilitation, and community engagement skills. Patience, empathy, and ability to work with vulnerable groups. Creativity in finding low-cost, practical farming solutions for small spaces. Problem-solving and innovation skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Flexibility and adaptability to field challenges. High accountability, professionalism, and attention to detail.
