The International Charter for Space and Major Disaster (Charter, in brief) is an international agreement among Space Agencies to support relief efforts in the event of emergencies caused by major disasters by providing satellite-based data andproducts. The Charter was initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Centre NationaldEtudes Spatiales (CNES) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), following the UNISPACE III conference in 1999. Today 17 Space Agencies collaborate in the Charter, and more Agencies are interested to become a member. The purpose of the Charter is to support with space-based data and information relief efforts in the event of emergencies caused by major disasters at no cost for therequester. The Charter provides: Disaster response Multi-satellite data acquisition planning Fast data turn-around - priority acquisition Archive retrievals and spacecraft tasking Data processingat pre-determined level Space Agency contribution in image/data Space Agency initiative for value-added-data fusion ESA is currently supporting the operations of the Charter making available dedicatedtools and managing specific services as follows. Charter Tools:- The Charter Operation System second generation (COS-2) and the Charter webportal (public part of COS-2).- The ESA Charter Geobrowser (CGT) accessible to the General public Charter Services:- The ESA Charter Mapper operation, maintenance and evolution- The Helpdesk operations.
