Work Detail
The Assignment Concerns The Integral Redesign Of The Pauwengraaf Shopping Street In Maasmechelen, With The Aim Of Transforming The Existing, Almost Completely Paved Public Space Into A Climate-Robust, High-Quality And Future-Oriented Urban Environment. The Works Fit Within A Global Vision In Which Water Management, Greening, Quality Of Life And Economic Vitality Are Approached In An Integrated Manner. The Current Layout Of The Pauwengraaf Is Characterized By A Very High Degree Of Paving, Making The Street Susceptible To Flooding During Heavy Precipitation, Heat Stress During Warm Periods And Limited Ecological And Residential Quality. This Project Aims To Structurally Tackle These Problems Through A Thorough Redesign Of The Public Domain. An Essential Part Of The Assignment Concerns The Construction Of A Climate-Adaptive Water Management System, In Which The Principle Of Maximum Infiltration And Buffering Of Rainwater Is Central. In Contrast To Traditional Sewerage Systems, Rainwater Is Kept On Site As Much As Possible, Infiltrated And Drained Off In A Delayed Manner. To This End, Two Continuous Infiltration Strips Are Constructed Over Almost The Entire Length Of The Street. These So-Called Wadis And Infiltration Zones Form The Backbone Of The Blue-Green Design. The Infiltration Berms Are Dimensioned To Achieve A Significant Buffer Capacity, So That Peak Flows During Heavy Rainfall Can Largely Be Absorbed Locally. An Emergency Overflow Is Only Provided In Exceptional Circumstances. The New Pavements Will Be Realized In Parallel With The Construction Of This Blue-Green Infrastructure. The Roadway, Sidewalks And Parking Lanes Will Be Redesigned With Attention To A Balanced Distribution Of The Available Space And With Special Attention To Accessibility, Traffic Safety And Quality Of Life. Where Possible, Water-Permeable Or Water-Passing Materials Are Used, So That The Infiltration Capacity Of The Public Domain Is Maximized. The Design Is Designed In Such A Way That It Is Not Only Functional, But Also Contributes To A Pleasant And Inviting Public Space For Residents, Traders And Visitors. The Various Catering Establishments On The Pauwengraaf Are Also Taken Into Account. At Various Locations, Extra Space Is Provided In The Sidewalk For The Installation Of A Terrace. This Project Also Includes Complete Landscaping And Planting. The Focus Is On Planting A Robust And Coherent Tree Stock, Supplemented With Plants And Ecological Green Structures. Only Native And Climate-Resistant Plant Species That Contribute To Biodiversity And Are Adapted To Specific Urban Conditions Are Used. The Greenery Is An Integral Part Of The Design And Contributes To Reducing Heat Stress, Improving Air Quality And Strengthening The Ecological Connections In The Area. Within The Project, Some Play Elements Are Also Provided, Such As Stepping Stones, Stepping Posts, Play Pebbles, A Natural Play Tree, Etc. Prior To The Main Contractors Work, The Utility Works Will Also Carry Out The Necessary Work. The Public Lighting Will Be Renovated, The Existing Fixtures On The Facade Will Be Removed And The Cabling Will Be Placed Underground. In Addition, Fiber Optic Will Be Installed Over The Entire Route And Connections Will Be Removed From The Facades Where Possible. The Contractor Must Carry Out All Works Taking Into Account The Principles Of Sustainability, Climate Adaptation And Integrated Water Management. Special Attention Is Paid To Limiting Disruption During Implementation. The Works Will Be Carried Out In Phases, Ensuring Maximum Accessibility To Businesses And Homes And Minimizing The Impact On The Daily Functioning Of The Street. The Works Are Scheduled To Start In The Autumn Of 2026 And Be Completed At The End Of 2027.
