Work Detail
Tenders are invited for E4EX-006 Mars Advanced Entry, Descent and Landing Capability (Medal) - Phase A The next European mission to land on Mars will be the Rosalind Franklin Rover mission, which relies on non-European input for key elements on the entry, descent and landing module. The rover will enter on a ballistic entry with no additional means for precision landing. Increase in mass and precision of future Mars surface missions in the coming decades is a strategic capability for Europe, as outlined in the Explore2040 strategy implementation roadmap. To achieve this ambition, Europe must advance developments of guided entry landers and their associated technologies, avoiding technological dead ends as the capability progresses. The Mars surface lander that is the subject of this study will target a high precision landing (2-7 km major axis), which could be the first in a roadmap of increasingly precise and heavier landers, eventually aiming for a pinpoint landing accuracy of a few 10s of metres. The objectives of this activity are to:- demonstrate the technical and programmatic feasibility (Phase A) of the first mission thatwill utilise an advanced entry descent and landing capability on Mars. Advanced entry, decent and landing (EDL) is defined as a capability toland on Mars with a higher level ofmass, guidance and precision than will have been achieved in Europe following the landingof Rosalind Franklin and includes fully European critical technologies.- assess a sustainable roadmap of technology developments suitable for increased precisionand mass landings on Mars in future missions, to avoid technological gaps and dead ends.
