Work Detail
Tenders are invited for High Efficiency HPA with Improved Linearity for High Fidelity Ranging Signals Expro+ Objective: To define and assess the feasibility of a digitally controlled, highly efficient and compact High-Power Amplifiers in L-band / C-band for PNT applications.Description: With the increased demand for navigation services, the number of signal componentstransmitted by a GNSS satellite has increased. Since constant envelope multiplexing schemes are not suitable (or inefficient) with ahigh number of signal components, modern GNSS systems generate signals with high PAPR (Peak to average Power Ratio). DC power efficiency is critical for high power amplifiers (HPA) transmitting signals with high PAPR. In the last decades several HPA architectureshave been investigated to solve this limitation. Among those, the category of polar transmitters such as Envelope Tracking (ET) andEnvelope Elimination and Restoration (EER) stand out for high efficiency and excellent thermal management of the transistors. Conversely, they showed major challenges such as high complexity and difficult implementation with wideband signals. Given the narrowbandnature of Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) signals, polar transmitters are a good candidate for PNT applications. The challenge of analogue envelope reconstruction can be overcome by a digital modulator, leveraging recent advances in digital technologies. Atthe same time, evolution of PNT services is moving beyond L-band, targeting C-band or other frequency bands with larger bandwidths, where there is no example of dedicated HPAs for navigation. This activity will investigate amplifier design solutions to address high PAPR narrow band, as well as medium PAPR broadband signal configurations. The amplifiers will include digital predistortion, to achieve high-quality PNT signal performance, and compact designs to target advanced payload architectures. The selected designs willbe demonstrated through the development and testing of elegant breadboards (EBB) This activity encompasses the following tasks: - Definition of the operational scenarios and end-to-end user requirements associated. - Literature review, oriented at the latest developments in ET and polar transmitters in general, in analogue and in digital domain, as well as in broadband HPA solutions - Trade-off and down-selection of the most promising technologies based on the survey and preliminary high-level studies - Breadboards detailed design, and analysis and preparation of manufacturing plan and test plan - Breadboards manufacturing and test - Critical analysis of the results obtained and future roadmap.Procurement Policy: C(1) = Activity restricted to non-prime contractors (incl. SMEs).
