This ultimate performance limit allows the contribution of readout noise to be entirely removed, eliminating a contribution to the signal to noise budget of instruments. In this activity, pixel architectures able to reach photon counting sensitivity in the 400-800 nm wavelength range are being explored. The assessment targets large focal plane arrays operating at high photon flux rates typical of Earth Observation applications. Other aspects such as susceptibility to thespace radiation environment and feasibility of manufacture within current CMOS imaging fabrication processes are considered. Following the requirements and device architecture assessment, this activity proposes a device design. In the case that suitable prototypedevices are already designed, detailed characterisation of their electro-optic performance shall be performed, with an assessment in a critical radiation environment.
