Work Detail
Architectural, Construction, Engineering And Inspection Services – Open Two-Phase Interdisciplinary Realization Competition | Checkpoint Charlie, A Place Of Education And Remembrance. Checkpoint Charlie - The Former Western Allied Checkpoint On Friedrichstrasse/Zimmerstrasse - Is One Of The Internationally Best-Known Historical Places In Berlin And Is Also A Highly Frequented Urban Space With Around 4 Million Visitors Every Year. The Memorial Site Includes The Former Gdr Border Crossing Point At Friedrichstrasse/Zimmerstrasse As Well As The Former Allied Checkpoint Checkpoint Charlie, Supplemented By The Associated Border Strip Along Zimmerstrasse And The Remaining Fire Walls With Traces Of The Gdr Border Regime. Together, These Elements Form A Monument Area Of Historical And Urban Significance And Are Part Of The Overall Listed Berlin Wall Complex. In Its Current Appearance And Use, The Place Falls Short Of Its Historical Significance. Neither The Spatial Design Nor The Content Communication Has So Far Done Justice To The Historical Weight And The High Number Of Visitors. Against This Background, There Is A Need To Permanently Design And Secure Urban Space As A Coherent Place Of Education And Remembrance. The Aim Is To Develop An Overall Concept That Is Convincing In Terms Of Design, Space And Content. The Focus Of The Task Is To Develop A Content-Sustainable Design Concept For The Place Of Education And Remembrance. What Is Crucial Here Is The Development Of An Exhibition Concept As The Core Content. Building On This, A Cultural And Urban Design Should Be Developed That Makes The Historical Significance And Context Of The Division Of Germany Understandable And Ensures International Comprehensibility. The State Of Berlin Is Launching An Open, Two-Phase Implementation Competition According To Rpw In Which Interdisciplinary Applicant Groups Made Up Of Landscape Architects, Architects And Exhibition Designers Can Take Part. The Competition Offers The Opportunity To Reposition The Location As A High-Quality Urban Space With International Appeal - As A Place For Everyone That Serves Both To Impart Historical Knowledge And Offers Space For Discussion On Current Issues Of Freedom, Democracy And The East-West Conflict. The Subject Of The Competition Is The Design And Conceptual Formulation Of A Public Urban Space That Makes The Historical Site Legible As A Place Of Education And Remembrance And At The Same Time Functions As A Contemporary Open Space. The Competition Aims At An Integrated Interaction Of Exhibition Areas And Elements And An Information Pavilion As Well As Urban And Open Space Design. The Educational And Memorial Site Is Looked After And Curated By The Berlin Wall Foundation, I.E. It Is Responsible For The Content Conception And Content Creation. The Exhibition Areas Should Serve To Present Historical Content And At The Same Time Be Designed As Dialogic Spaces, I.E
