The organization is a global leader in the movement to end modern slavery, including forced labor, human trafficking, child exploitation, and other forms of severe exploitation. Its mission is to liberate people trapped in slavery and transform the conditions that allow exploitation to persist by addressing structural drivers such as poverty, discrimination, weak labor protections, and lack of accountability. Through community-based programs, research, advocacy, and partnerships, Free the Slaves works with local organizations, governments, and survivor leaders to prevent exploitation, support survivors, and strengthen national systems to combat modern slavery. The organization focuses on empowering vulnerable communities, promoting policy reforms, and mobilizing collective action across civil society and institutions to build sustainable solutions that prevent slavery and advance freedom and dignity worldwide. Position Overview Free the Slaves is seeking a dedicated, experienced Temporary Finance Consultant to support the organizations effective financial management. This position is responsible for posting 2025 bank transactions into QuickBooks, performing balance account reconciliations, reviewing and posting advances, maintaining accurate financial records, and ensuring compliance with internal policies and donor requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, exceptional attention to detail, and experience working in the nonprofit sector. The consultant will work closely with program teams and the Finance Manager to support budgeting, financial planning, and audit preparation. This is a temporary assignment for two months, working three days per week. This position reports to the Finance Manager. This position will be based in Washington, DC, USA. Responsibilities Post 2025 bank transactions into QuickBooks, ensuring each transaction is correctly coded to the appropriate chart of accounts and recorded on the accurate date. Perform monthly bank account reconciliations for all bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts. Record payment dates in Bill.com to match the actual bank transaction dates when payments clear. Review all transactions to ensure accuracy, proper documentation, and compliance with organizational policies. Review supporting documentation for advances and post them accurately into QuickBooks. Maintain organized financial records to support reporting requirements and audit preparedness. Perform other finance and administrative duties as assigned. Compensation This is a part-time consultant position with an hourly rate of $35, commensurate with experience. The contract duration is two months, with the consultant working three days per week (approximately 24 days total). This position is not eligible for benefits. Qualifications Bachelors degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. A professional certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA) is an added advantage. Minimum of 35 years of relevant accounting or finance experience, preferably within the nonprofit/NGO sector. Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and other related platforms, including Bill.com, Stripe, PayPal, Convera Global Pay, etc. Strong knowledge of financial regulations, donor compliance, and reporting standards. Excellent Excel and data analysis skills. High level of integrity and attention to detail. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Good interpersonal and communication abilities. Knowledge of U.S. local tax laws and financial reporting requirements. Experience working with donor-funded projects. Some additional language knowledge, such as French, Spanish, or Arabic, is a plus.
