Tenders are invited for Annular Focusing Planar Lens for (Multiple-Beam) Conical Scanning Imagers - Expro plus To develop an annular focusing planar lens for conical scanning imagers. Description Conical scanning is required for different earth observation missions based on radar and radiometric instruments. Two mission concepts submitted to the Earth Explorer 11 campaign proposed this kind of solution, Wivern and Stream. Typically, this specific beam scanning is achieved by spinning the entire antenna system around the nadir axis. Although effective, this solution presents several problems. Specifically, vibrations can cause de-pointing which might impact the instrument performance. Moreover, mass is an issue since the rotation of the full antenna system requires counterweights of similar mass.An annular focusing quasi-optical system can be used to simplify the mechanical beam steering solution. In fact, this particular configuration presents an annular focus region which matches the conical scanning requirement. Annular focusing reflectors have been shown to provide good performance in one scanning plane. However, an offset configuration will limit the performance in the rest of the field of view. The activity aims at defining an annular focusing planar lens solution which is symmetric and can achieve similar performance over all the scanning planes. The study focuses on the requirements of the mission concepts such as Stream, Ka-band, proposed at the Earth Explorer 11 campaign or GPM Core Observatory Ku and Ka-band instruments, measuring precipitation from low-earth orbit. Different configurations shall be compared, such as planar printed single, dual lenses and onstrained lenses. A focal plane array can be used to generate the spot beams along the annular focusing region. If the number ofrequired feeds is too large, a simple mechanically spinning feed shall be considered and compared in terms of complexity with a fullysampled solution. More than one concentric rings of feeds can be used to generate multiple-beams allowing simultaneous observationsat different angles. A trade-off shall be carried out in terms of scanning capabilities, mass, efficiency and thermal stability. This activity encompasses the following tasks: - Consolidation of the requirements - Trade-off analysis among several solutions and identification of the most promising antenna configuration- Design and detailed analysis Procurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl. SMEs) is required. Tender Link : https://esastar-publication-ext.sso.esa.int/ESATenderActions/filter/open
