Tenders are invited for Legal Adviser Closing Date: 22 Sep 2025 Type: Consultancy About the Team The Child Justice Team (CJT) is currently engaged in building the capacity of Ukrainian justice actors relating to child friendly justice. The CJT is seeking a Senior Legal Advisor for a new project on Child-Sensitive Approaches to Improve Responses to Deportation of Ukrainian Children. The Project aims to strengthen child-friendly documentation, investigation/prosecution, and adjudication of crimes related to the deportation of children; and enhance child-friendly and trauma-informed processes and procedures for engaging with child victims and witnesses of deportation-relation crimes. Working alongside civil society partners, national coordinating bodies, and national justice authorities, the projects activities will include capacity building and assistance to civil society on documentation of deportation-related crimes and engaging with accountability mechanisms; development of child-friendly SOP Toolkit and a Trauma-Informed Handbook, alongside training and mentorship to embed standards; and Skill-sharing workshops and outcome documents on child-friendly approaches to justice. We are seeking a Legal Adviser for our Child Justice Team who provides specialist legal expertise relating to the documentation of deportation-related crimes, conducts comprehensive research, and provides high quality drafts of relevant documents, including legal memoranda, legal submissions, and guidance. The Legal Advisor assists the substantive work of the team including the development of SOPs and conducting training programmes for beneficiaries. The role is involved in developing and maintaining relationships with organisations working on crimes against and affecting children in Ukraine. Full / Part-time: Full-time Location: Ukraine (On a rotational deployment cycle) The Role Provide ongoing legal advice, support, and mentorship to the Ukrainian civil society, and justice authorities. Assist in the development of child-friendly best practices for the documentation of deportation-related crimes. Identify and develop the investigative tools, protocols and guidelines, as well as other documents, to be employed to ensure a child-sensitive approach throughout all aspects of investigations and prosecutions. Provide support for training on child-friendly documentation and approaches to justice. Develop and support advocacy activities related to the deportation of children and other conflict-related crimes against and affecting children. Promote the adoption of child-sensitive practices in investigative and prosecutorial authorities engaged in CAAC cases. Maintain and develop working relationships with key persons and organisations working on conflict-affected crimes against and affecting children. Coordinate with other GRC teams to ensure a child-sensitive approach is mainstreamed throughout all activities. Your Background 4+ years experience in the documentation, investigation and/or prosecution of international crimes, including crimes against and affecting children. Experience and knowledge of international criminal law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. Knowledge on integrating child-friendly, trauma-informed and victim-centred justice into work practices. Strong interest in CAAC, child rights violations, and integration of child-sensitive approaches into international core crimes, including child-friendly justice frameworks. Passion to develop skills, and work creatively to achieve desired outcomes. Ability to work effectively with the whole range of criminal justice actors. Administratively competent, organised and confident multitasking. Practical experience in working with high volumes of sensitive material and with the requisite skills for collating, sharing, and working with such material. Fluency in English, both written and verbal skills. Note: This role is contingent upon confirmation of funding.
