Work Detail

Expression of Interest are invited for Mapping, Tool Development and Analysis of Opportunities to Advance Plastic Circularity in LAC. Publication Date: 09/04/2025 12:00 AM EDT EOI Deadline: 09/18/2025 11:59 PM EDT Plastic as a product has many useful features since it is cheap and versatile, and it can easily be applied to a very wide range of low and high value products. However, if the disposal of plastic waste is not managed well, the valuable input factor of many production processes can leak into the environment, turning into a severe environmental pollutant that affects wildlife and ecosystems. In particular, microplastics, which are plastics that are further broken down into small particles by sunlight, sea, wind and wave action, have emerged around the world. Even more alarming is that these particles have been found in our food and water, which potentially harms our health. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) is especially exposed to the dangers of plastic pollution since a well-developed waste management infrastructure is lacking, and waste recycling rates are below 10%. In LAC, close to 17,000 tons of plastic waste are generated and disposed of daily. Moreover, the vast coastline of LAC encompassing 119k km makes the region more susceptible to the rapid spread and accumulation of plastics in water. As more than 205m people in LAC (roughly 31%) live within 50km of this coastline, this means that many communities and livelihoods are affected by the consequences of plastic pollution. Furthermore, the waste management infrastructure in many countries in LAC still remains insufficient, which is why in 2020 roughly 3.7m tons of plastic waste from the countries in LAC entered the oceans. Current rates of recycling and waste recovery remain below 10% in the region, which highlights that there is still a big gap to address the problem of plastic pollution. As a first step to act on this issue, 27 out of 33 countries in LAC have passed legislation to reduce, prohibit or eliminate single use plastics. Given the level of plastic pollution in LAC, IFC is determined to act and advance solutions at a company level that promote plastic circularity in the region. With a focus on promoting plastic circularity in the production and consumption of plastic resins and reducing the amount of virgin plastic in operations, IFC seeks to hire a consultant to (i) undertake a market mapping; (ii) develop a plastic circularity tool, (iii) pilot the tool with at least two companies to be identified by IFC; and (iv) identify a number of short to medium term (1-2yrs) CapEx financing opportunities with prioritized companies from the mapping.
