Tenders are invited for Compact Spectrometers Using Metasurfaces - Expro plus. Open Date: 03/09/2025 11:31 CET Closing Date: 15/10/2025 13:00 CET Price Range: 200-500 KEURO To demonstrate a novel ultra-compact spectrometer system by exploring the use of meta surfaces and other planar optics. Description Recent developments in planar optics technology have shown a promising path towards the miniaturization of traditional optical instruments like spectrometers (e.g., on-going OSIP study Compressive Sensing of Trace Gases: Replacing Diffractive Elements by anostructured Transmission Filters on a Detector). The incorporated, highly scalable wafer level technology further allows a cost-efficient manufacturing. For Earth Observation (EO), building on those promising preliminary developments is a major opportunity to monitor trace gasses from several small spacecrafts and to decrease the size and the costs of the overall optical payload.Nano-structures can be engineered to either have a lens, grating, retarder, anti-reflection coating, or filter function; or even a mixture of these functions in a single robust element. By incorporating a tailored computational data processing chain e.g., using compressive sensing algorithms or machine learning, the overall performance (e.g., sensitivity, spectral resolution) can be optimized while the required data rate and the integration costs can be minimized. A metasurface-based spectrometer resulting from a combination of dispersive engineering, nano-lithography, systems design and computational processing can therefore render future optical payloads with extremely small form factors as well as high robustness and cost efficiency. The final outcome of this activity is an ultra-compact planar spectrometer system that demonstrates the potential of this technology in the frame of EO applications.This activity encompasses the following tasks:- Explore metasurface designs targeting representative specifications for EO- Definition of system-level spectrometer design- Component level development, integration, and demonstration of planar optics- Integrated system breadboard to demonstrate functionality and performance testing.Procurement Policy: C(2) = A relevant participation (in terms of quality and quantity) of non-primes (incl.
