concessional credit facilities under the Indian Development and Economic Assistance Scheme IDEAS to overseas governments I their nominated agencies in developing countries for financing projects Guinea s economy is largely dependent on agriculture and mineral production It is the world s second largest producer of bauxite and has rich deposits of diamonds and gold Guinea shares a border with Senegal on the north Mali on the northeast Ivory Coast to the east and Liberia and Sierra Leone to the south There is 320 km 200 mi of coastline and a total land border of 3 400 km 2 100 mi It lies mostly between latitudes 7 and 13 N and longitudes 7 and 15 W a small area is west of 15 Guinea is divided into four main regions Maritime Guinea or Lower Guinea or the Basse Cote lowlands has a surface area of 44 254 km2 or 18 of the total area of the country populated mainly by the Susu ethnic group The Middle Guinea capital Lab has an area of 54 089 km2 or 22 of the country s total area Upper Guinea capital Kankan has a surface area of 98 343 km2 i e 40 of the total area of the country and Forested jungle regions in the southeast Forest Guinea capital N Zerekore has an area of 49 171 km2 or 20 of the total area of the country with several ethnic groups The immediate project area covers the last two regions described above i e Upper Guinea and Forest Jungle region Administrative Map of Guinea Conakry is as under Rainfall varies between 1 200 mm and 4 000 mm in the country and is considered one of the most irrigated in West Africa Guinea has a humid tropical climate with an alternating dry season and a rainy season whose duration varies from one region to another Rainfall lasts eight months in Forest Guinea and five months in Upper Guinea Project backgroundThe 225kV Guinea Mali interconnection project is part of the priority projects of the West African Power Pool WAPP WAAP is an ECOWAS specialized institution which is the institutional framework of the regional power system With the objective to seek collective economic wellbeing in the energy sector The WAPP networks cover two geographical zones A and B The countries in zone A Nigeria Niger Benin Togo Burkina Faso Ghana and Cdte d Ivoire are already hooked to the interconnections Among the countries in zone B Mali Liberia Guinea Sierra Leone Guinea Bissau Senegal and Gambia only Senegal and Mali are already interconnected The interconnection of the electricity networks of Guinea and Mali is part of the Cote d Ivoire Liberia Sierra Leone Guinea energy network project establishing second electric link between Cote d Ivoire and Mali by establishing a link with the Ghana Burkina Faso Mali interconnection project and the OMVG OMVS system thereby strengthening the interconnection of Zone A and Zone B of the WAPP The purpose of the project is to interconnect the electricity grids of Guinea and Mali and involves installation of a high voltage network comprising a 225 kV 714 km double circuit line connecting the N Z r kor substation in Guinea to the Sanankoroba substation in Mali through the city of Siguiri Fomi the site of proposed hydroelectric power station and the cities of Kankan K rouan6 and Beyla with a maximum transmission capacity of 668 MW The Guinean section cuts through the Forest Guinea and Upper Guinea and covers about 588 km The altitude of the line varies between 300 and 820m The technical solution adopted is the construction of a double circuit line maximum transit capacity of 334 MW per phase It should be noted that the total length of the transmission line within the Guinean territory from the N Z r kor post to the border with Mali 588 km covering 5 substations out of which the current scope of the project covers transmission line of 135 5 km from the Siguiri substation to that of Fomi Substation
