Transport Infrastructure Investment Sector Project Formerly Bridge Replacement Project 40 Critical Bridges In Fiji The Purpose Of The Transport Infrastructure Investment Sector Project Tiisp And Transport Infrastructure Investment Project Wb Collectively Hereinafter Called The Project The Project Will Improve Access To Socioeconomic Opportunities By Supporting The Government To Upgrade And Rehabilitate Land And Maritime Transport Infrastructure The Project Will Finance Civil Works To Repair Rehabilitate Reconstruct Or Upgrade Existing Roads Bridges And Rural Jetties And Wharves It Will Also Finance Safety Improvements On Selected Roads And Bridges Which May Include Road Safety Furniture And Streetlights Subprojects Will Be Selected In Accordance With The Approved Subproject Selection Criteria Framework This Assignment Will Contribute To The Overall Objectives Of The Project Despite Steady Economic Improvement The Quality Of Infrastructure In Fiji Continues To Lag Significantly Behind Less Than Optimal Infrastructure Leads To Higher Economic Cost Which In Turn Undermines Business Potential And Economic Opportunities The Poor State Of Fiji Infrastructure Is Attributed To A Number Of Factors Including I Insufficient Infrastructure Investment Ii Inadequate Or Incomplete Infrastructure Plans And Implementation Programs Iii Limited Access To International Expertise And Constrained Technical And Management Know How In Project Preparation And Implementation And Iv Reduced Sustainability Due To Lack Of Resources For Operation And Maintenance As A Result Infrastructure Projects Are Often Not Delivered As Planned Due To Either Poor Project Formulation Or Poor Project Implementation Or Both Delays In Safeguard Compliance Procurement And Land Acquisition As Well As Inadequate Project Management Systems Also Contribute Significantly To Delays And Higher Cost Of Infrastructure Projects
