Managementmeasures Structural Measures Will Imp Rove The Conveyance Of Water To The Suriname And Saramacca Rivers From Excess Rainfall Onthe City Of Paramaribo To Significantly Re Duce The Periods Areal Extent And Intensity Of Flooding In Addition This Componentwill Improve The Navigation Condition P Subcomponent 1 1 Rehabilitation Of Sluices And Locks And Canal Re Profiling Andclearing Us 21 5 Million This Subcompon Ent Will Focus On I The Rehabilitation Of Sluices And Locks The Projectwill Finance The Rehabilitation Of Two Ship Locks Each A T The Outlets Of The Saramacca And Suriname Rivers As Well As Thefive Door Sluice Gate At The Outlet To Suriname River And The Fou R Door Sluice Gate At The Outlet To Saramacca River This Will Bethe First Activity To Be Undertaken Under Component 1 So That Wate R Levels In The Canal Can Be Adequately Managed While The Otherwork Components Are Carried Out Ii Increase Conveyance And Naviga Tion Through Re Profiling And Clearing The Saramacca Canalwill Be Re Profiled And Cleared To Remove The Earth Fill And To Increasethe Navigation Capacity Of The Canal And Eliminatehydraulic Restrictions Sediment Will Also Be Cleared From The Outlets Of The Se Condary Canals Where They Join The Saramacca Canal Up To An Approximate Distance Of 250 M This Activity Will Also Finance The Est Ablishment Of One Or More Sediment Disposal Areasfor The Management Of The Dredged Material Non Polluted Sediments Will Be Process Ed For Reuse And Polluted Sediments Will Bedisposed To A Designated Location In Accordance With Environmental Safeguards Procedure S Subcomponent 1 2 Upgradingof Selected Critical Secondary Or Tertiary Urban Sub Catchment Areas With Piloting Of Floo D Management Solutions Us 7 5Million Focuses On Pilot Structural And Non Structural Interventions On Critical Areas Prone To Flooding In The Secondary Ortertiary Sub Catchment Drainage Systems With Possible Utilization Of Green Solutions For Flood Manageme Nt During Update Parts Of The 2001 Drainage Master Plan Anddevelop And Update Guid Elines And Recommendations For Efficiently Planning And Managing The Saramacca Canal Drainage Area Including Drainage Design Standa Rds And Norms Regulations Flood Risk Hazard Maps And Other Data Will Be Shared With Relevantministries To Inform Land Use Planni Ng Strategies Within The Greater Paramaribo Area Subcomponent 2 2 Drainage Infrastructure Asset Manageme Nt Platform Us 1 5 Million This Subcomponent Focuses On Ta Informationtechnology Equipment And Software And Trainin G To Improve The Operation Management And Surveillance Of The Drainage System Anasset Management Platform For Operational Manage Ment Of The Saramacca Canal Will Be Established To Ensure Optimization Of Thecanal Water Levels For Flood Control Navigation And Irrigation Purposes During The Day To Day Operation Of The System Takinginto Account Short Lived Intense Rainfall Events And Long Er Term Seasonal Wet And Dry Cycles The Operational Management Andmonitoring Platform Will Ensure Prioritization Of Functions Flo Od Control Navigation And Irrigation Based On A Flood Anddrought Forecasting System And Also Define Regular Monitoring And Maint Enance Activities Such As Flushing Of Thecanal Whereby Water Is Accumulated In The Channel And Is Allowed To Dispers E Rapidly Out Of The Sluices At Low Tide Clearingfloating Vegetation And Accumulated Sediment To Allow Obstruction Free Navigation The System Will Also Be Optimized To Allownavigation In Addition The Hydromet Data Management System Will Be Strengthened And Aflood Forecasting Service Developed Existing Hydromet Instrumentation Will Be Expanded To Provide Real Time Observations Of Weathe R Variables And Water Levels In Thesaramacca Canal And Main Secondary Canals Additional Tidal Gauges Will Be Installed To Monitor Water Levels Of Suriname Andsaramacca Rivers In The Vicinity Of The Saramacca Canal A Flood Forecasting System For Paramaribo And The
